Donald R. Mumford Obituary – 10/1/2015


Donald Robert Mumford, age 87, of Dassel, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015.

A celebration of Don’s life will take place Monday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Howard Lake.

There will be a gathering of family and friends Sunday, Oct. 4 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with 7 p.m. prayer, at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake. Visitation will continue Monday, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Don was born April 21, 1928, at home in Waverly, to Earl and Joy (Bullivant) Mumford. He was baptized and confirmed at the Union Presbyterian Church in Waverly.

Don graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1946.

He served the Waverly Fire Department, and later in the US army.

Don was united in marriage to Adell Johnson Sept. 18, 1954, at Knapp Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with the birth of five children.

Don was a Mason, and a member of the American Legion for 60 years.

He was a self-employed businessman, and managed and owned Breezy Point Resort in Howard Lake for 31 years.

Don was a very active member of the Presbyterian Church in Waverly and Howard Lake.

He was a story teller and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, reading, and spending time with his family. He was also a handyman who spent time tinkering in his shop.

Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Adell; children, Bruce (Pixie) Mumford of Litchfield, Judy Mumford-Torres, Glen (Karen) Mumford, all of Howard Lake, and Diane (Jay) Mumford-Sohns of Darwin; grandchildren, Aaron, Brian (Sonya), Elisabeth (Eric), Brandon, Austin, Tyler, Emilee, Charlie, Michael, and Nash; great-grandchildren Atticus and Karolina; a sister, Helen (Harold) DeNoon of California; and a brother-in-law, Robert Johnson of Buffalo; along with many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Earl; a son-in-law, Gilbert Torres, and a brother, Gordon.
