Lila M. Quaas, 91

Lila Magdelena Quaas, age 91, of Mayer, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, Aug. 14, 2015.

She was born Jan. 22, 1924, in Montrose, the daughter of Otto A. and Martha (Lemke) Barlau. Lila was baptized Feb. 17, 1924, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theodore Rolf; and confirmed Aug. 1, 1937, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montrose by the Rev. Alvin Leersseu.

Lila was united in marriage to Benjamin W. Quaas June 6, 1946, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. E. Schwandt.

In the early years, Lila assisted her husband with farm activities and raising a family.

She worked outside the home housecleaning for several years.

Lila was the hub of the family, which everything else revolved around. She always knew the right thing to do, and her opinion was valued greatly. Lila was always glad to listen and discuss what was happening.

She was a member of the St. Mark’s quilters group for a number of years, and enjoyed gathering with friends. She also made quilts at home for all her children and grandchildren; and sewed quilts with her sisters, which was always a special time.

Lila enjoyed visiting with relatives, and looked forward to shopping trips to Hutchinson. She was always busy with gardening, canning, and cooking; and her homemade pickles were always a treat. Lila was an excellent cook, and always planned her meals ahead of time.

She also loved to do word search puzzles until a stroke in December took that ability away from her.

Lila was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin; parents Otto and Martha Barlau; brothers Hubert and Walter Barlau; and sisters Edna Mielke and Lorena Henning.

She is survived by her loving family: sons Larry (Linda) Quaas of Norwood Young America, Darrell Quaas of Dassel, Keith Quaas of Mayer, and Kevin Quaas of Waconia; grandchildren Donald Quaas, Jessica (David) Trujillo, and Jeremy (Katie) Quaas; great-grandchildren Morgan, Jadyn, EmmeLynn, Dane and Levi Turjillo; and Carter and Nicole Quaas; sister-in-law Sylvia Quaas of Chaska; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Lila’s funeral service took place Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

There was visitation Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with a chapel service at 6:45 p.m. Visitation continued Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Casket bearers were Larry Quaas, Darrell Quaas, Keith Quaas, Kevin Quaas, Donald Quaas, and Jeremy Quaas.

Honorary casket bearer was Jessica Trujillo.
