Hugh Schmidt, 91

Hugh Otto (Sonny) Schmidt, age 91, of Delano, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015.

He was born Sept. 6, 1924, near Hamel, where he lived until entering the US Navy SEABEES in 1943.

Hugh spent most of his married life in Loretto, Greenfield, and Rockford.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edie (Spurzem); 13 children; Ronald, Renee (Larry) Jordan, Roy, Randy (Cheryl), Rebecca (Steve) Neumann, Rick (Deb), Rodger (Sandra), Ruth (Kevin) Isaacson, Russell (Mary), Robert, Ralph, Rosemary, and Ramona; 35 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Hugh is further survived by brothers Roger, and Gordy (Katie); sisters Oreta (Howie) Gray, and Ival Fleming; brother and sister-in-law Roy and Rosie Spurzem; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Ival; a daughter, Rachelle; a grandson, Donald; and a sister, Marvel Miller.

Hugh leaves behind a legacy of commitment to family, and service to the community. He volunteered many hours as youth baseball coach in Loretto, first organized in 1956; founded the Loretto Fire Department, where he was fire chief; served eight years on Loretto City Council, and was mayor of Greenfield for six years.

He was a past commander of the Rockford American Legion, and recently a member of the Delano American Legion.

A dedicated public servant, Hugh was yet a private person. His wife and family were number-one in his life. He kept in constant contact with them through visits, phone, and Internet.

Hugh’s humor and wit will be missed by all.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at St Peter Catholic Church in Delano.

There was visitation Friday, Nov. 27 at Martha’s Hall of St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 3:30 p.m. rosary service. Visitation continued Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m., prior to the Mass.

Arrangements were with the Iten Funeral Home of Delano.
