Evelyn E. Strei, 96

Evelyn E. Strei, age 96, of Lester Prairie, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

She was born April 7, 1919, in Winsted Township, McLeod County, the daughter of Herman and Else (Hedtke) Schmidt.

Evelyn was baptized April 27, 1919, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hollywood Township, Carver County, by the Rev. Walter L. Ernst. She was also instructed in the Lutheran catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith April 10, 1933, also at St. John’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Walter L. Ernst.

Evelyn Schmidt and Walter Strei were joined in holy marriage March 28, 1939, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bergen Township, McLeod County. God blessed this union with three sons.

Evelyn and Walter engaged in dairy farming for many years in Winsted Township, McLeod County.

Evelyn enjoyed farming, canning, and cooking.

She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

Evelyn is survived by her loving sons: Kenneth (Karen) Strei, Larry (Patricia) Strei, and Michael Strei, all of Lester Prairie; six grandchildren: Tamara Robinson, Tanya (Wayne) Mathews, Chad (Stephanie) Strei, Jennifer Strei and special friend Brenton Anderson, MacKenzie (Jamie) Stender, and Ashley Strei and special friend Joe Brown; nine great-grandchildren: Nicole Otto, Trey Strei, Owen Strei, Lance Kjenstad, Josephine Kjenstad, Madelyn Kjenstad, Morgan Anderson, Corbyn Stender and Brock Stender; a sister, Dorothy Ernst of Lester Prairie; a sister-in-law, Aurelia Strei of Lester Prairie; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Strei; her parents, Herman and Else Schmidt; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Agnes Strei; brothers Vernon and Ortwin (Lorna) Schmidt; a sister, Pauline Paul; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Fritz Dangers, Hilda and Gust Westerman, Erna and Ed Ristow, Al Strei, Roland and Dorothy Strei, and John Strei; and brothers-in-law Stanley Ernst, Martin Brinkmeier, Carl Lemmerman, and Ed Paul.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating. Interment followed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

There was visitation Saturday at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services.

Casket bearers were Chad Strei, Jamie Stender, Lance Kjenstad, Wayne Mathews, Jeremy Otto, and Gary Ernst.
