He was born July 16, 1927, in Cologne, the son of Harvey and Emma (Mielke) Thaemert. Verlan was baptized Aug. 7, 1927, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carver by the Rev. Theo Kohn; and confirmed May 4, 1941, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theo Rolf.
