Phyllis G. Weseloh Obituary – 11/12/2015


Phyllis Gloria Weseloh, age 92, of Hutchinson, formerly of Cokato, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015.

She was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Cokato, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Nordstrom) Zierke. Phyllis was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.

She was a graduate of Cokato High School.

As a young woman, Phyllis worked at Onan’s Corporation in Minneapolis. Later, she worked as an insurance specialist at the Hutchinson Medical Center for 25 years.

Phyllis happily married Datlaf Albert Weseloh of Hutchinson, June 10, 1944, while he was on leave from the US Navy. They shared 71 years of marriage.

Phyllis was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 70 years, and was past president. She enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Halloween parties. She also served as an election judge for the City of Hutchinson until she was 90 years old.

Her life’s purpose was to care for others. Phyllis enjoyed baking chocolate coffee cakes, angel food cakes, chocolate chip cookies, and sugar cookies; knitting mittens, scarves, hats, sweaters and blankets; and needlepointing.

She also enjoyed roller skating, swing dancing and square dancing, and clipping and trying new recipes that filled 11 wooden recipe boxes. Phyllis always remembered birthdays and holidays with greeting cards. She took pride in her amazing geraniums, and enjoyed going to the craft fair and the community theatre at the event center.

She especially loved hearing from and sharing time with her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis lived on the Crow River at 1109 Lewis Avenue in Hutchinson for 58 years, recently moving to Ecumen Oaks and Pines senior living apartments.

She is survived by her husband, Datlaf Weseloh of Hutchinson; children: D. Vaughn (Chip) Weseloh and his wife, Linda of Toronto Ontario Canada, Reed Thomas Weseloh and his wife, Lois of Hutchinson, and Kimberly Phyllis Weseloh and her husband, Wayne Meisel of Princeton, NJ; and 11 grandsons, Sean Weseloh McKeane and his wife, Jennifer, of Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, Derek Tatyrek and his wife, Kristin of West Linn, OR, Liam Weseloh and his wife, Erin of Sicklerville, NJ, Keir Weseloh of Toronto, Ontario Canada, Michael Weseloh of Big Lake, Timothy Weseloh and his wife, Lisa, Jonathan Weseloh, all of Hutchinson; Abraham Meisel, Will Meisel, Zechariah Meisel, and Elijah Meisel, all of Princeton, NJ.

Phyllis is further survived by great-grandchildren Ava and Lucia Weseloh McKeane of Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, Madelyn and Meghan Tatyrek of West Linn, OR, Hannah and Brenden Weseloh of Big Lake, and Gavin, Audrey and Laynee Weseloh of Hutchinson; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Emma Zierke.

A celebration of Phyllis’ life took place Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hutchinson. There was visitation from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church, prior to the service.
