Edwin W. Anderson, 85

Edwin William Anderson, age 85, of Dassel, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016, at his home.

He was born March 23, 1931, in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, the son of Hugo Martin and Lulu Mae (Lewerenz) Anderson.

Edwin was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, and was presently a faithful member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel.

He grew up in Dassel, and graduated from Dassel High School in 1949.

Edwin served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany during the Korean War.

After the service, he was employed as a retail delivery truck driver for Dayton’s Department Store, and was employed by Dayton’s for 43 years, retiring in 1991.

Edwin was united in marriage to Virginia Asplin March 19, 1954, at the First Lutheran Church in Dassel. The couple made their home in Minneapolis from 1954 until 1956. They then moved to Crystal, where they lived until 1991, when Edwin retired from retail delivery.

Upon their retirement, Edwin and Virginia made their home on Lake Washington in Dassel until 2016, when they moved into the city of Dassel.

A quiet unassuming man, Edwin was always willing to lend a hand. He had served on the board of directors of the Dassel History Center during its inception; and was also a member of the Dassel Rod and Gun Club.

He would often be found making coffee in the church kitchen for Sunday morning coffee, helping with putting up and taking down decorations, ushering, and had helped with the refurbishing of the church library.

Edwin loved bird watching, fishing, landscaping, and travel. He and Virginia had visited many countries around the world, and Edwin especially enjoyed his travels to Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland, Cancun, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal, along with traveling around the continental United States.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Virginia Anderson of Dassel; daughters Lynn Broberg of San Antonio, TX, and Carol (Charles) LaBerge of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren: Alisha (Kevin) Lariscy, Caroline (Jeff) Lundquist, John (Kristine) LaBerge, Christine (Brian) Raskob, Sophia (Greg) Martin, Anderson Broberg, and Gina Broberg; five great-grandchildren: Cash Lariscy, Violet Lariscy, Nicholas Lundquist, Elizabeth Lundquist, and Paul LaBerge; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Merlin and Virgil Anderson; and a son-in-law, Robert Broberg.

The funeral service took place Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel with the Rev. Daniel Belgum-Blad officiating. There was visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will take place in the spring at the Dassel Community Cemetery.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel handled the arrangements.
