Charles W. Bates, age 88, of Waconia, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Lighthouse of Waconia.
He was born Feb. 19, 1928, in Willmar, the son of Leon and Topsy (Ranum) Bates.
Charles was united in marriage to Ruth A. Kuhlman Oct. 4, 1952, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Bates; parents Leon and Topsy Bates; brother Jack Bates; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lyn and Steve Hahn.
He is survived by his loving family: sons and daughters-in-law Michael and Nancy Bates of Lester Prairie, Tim and Laura Bates of Minnetonka, and Joe Bates of Minneapolis; grandchildren Lucas Bates, Jae Bates, and Evan Bates; sister Nancy (Harold) Haugen of Roseville; brother Danny (Gerie) Bates of Willmar; sisters-in-law Joan Bates of Duluth, and Sande (Bill) Drew of Mayer; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service took place Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Waconia, with the Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. There was a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family of Charles Bates prefers memorials be directed to Safe Passage for Children.
