Glenard Bechtold, 86

Glenard R. Bechtold, age 86, of Buffalo, passed away peacefully in his home to Jesus’ loving arms Monday, Feb. 22, 2016.

He was born Jan. 13, 1930, to Richard and Ellen (Lange) Bechtold of Greenfield, MN. Glenard was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover.

He attended Buffalo High School and then enlisted in the US Navy, where he served as petty officer (gunners mate 2nd class) and later was promoted to chief petty officer aboard the USS Coolbaugh DE 217, stationed at Key West Naval Station in Florida. He served from 1948 to 1952, serving an additional year due to the start of the Korean War.

Glenard was united in marriage to Joan Schindler May 12, 1951, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pelican Lake.

Glenard was a retired commercial plumbing superintendent with the Twin Cities pipefitters union.

He and Joan loved traveling, and visited nearly every state. They especially enjoyed their annual trips to Florida and Duluth, and annual fishing trips to Longville, MN with their family.

Glenard spent time helping family and friends with home repairs, plumbing, yard work, and moving grandchildren to apartments.

He was a faithful member of Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church of Delano, and later at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rockford. He served on the church council, school board, various offices and volunteered with various repair work.

Glenard was a gentle, strong, loving Christian husband and father. He loved the outdoors, being an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed annual hunting and fishing trips with his family.

He will be dearly missed, especially for his love, courage and sense of humor.

Glenard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Eugene and Wilfred; sister Norma Miller; son Neal; son-in-law Douglas Ebeling; and daughters-in-law Carol, and Kim.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons Brian (Kerry) of Richmond, Todd of Buffalo, and Mark of St. Cloud; daughters Jill Ebeling, and Joy (Jeffrey) Downs, all of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Elaine Bechtold of Hanover, and Dolores Schindler of Hutchinson; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Schindler of Buffalo.

Funeral services took place Friday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
