William Michael “Billy” Doherty, age 68, of Waverly, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016, after a two-and-one-half-year courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
He was born July 16, 1947, in Buffalo, to Francis “Babe” Doherty and Elnor Vivian Eggergluss.
William grew up and lived in Buffalo most of his life, graduating from Buffalo High School in 1965.
He then served in the US Army Air 19th Aviation BTN from 1965 to 1969.
In 1969, Bill began his career in concrete construction with Minnesota State Curb and Gutter, where he worked for 25 years; and then for North Country Concrete Inc. for the last 20 years, before retiring.
Bill married his high school sweetheart, Karen Nelson April 10, 1996,
In the summer, Bill’s spare time was spent at Mille Lac’s Lake, where he owned a lake area place with his wife, Karen. Bill’s brother-in-law and sister, Tom and Cathy Jorgenson were also at Mille Lac’s and they did lots of fishing together and traveling.
Bill and Karen loved to travel, including cruises and flying, but mostly driving to see the country and stop at garage sales.
Bill loved the outdoors, and truly enjoyed woodworking.
He was a member of the American Legion.
Bill loved his grandchildren, and always had time to play, go tubing, fish, take in parades, and have a listening ear when they needed it.
Heis survived by his wife, Karen Doherty; father, Francis “Babe” Doherty; sisters, Cathy (Tom) Jorgenson, and Judy (Jeff) Schwietering; stepson Jesse (Melynda) Watson; grandchildren Jessica, Emily and Ava; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elnor Doherty.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo, with visitation one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
