Lavonne Hayden Obituary – 10/16/2016


Lavonne Hayden, age 88, of Watertown, passed away Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016.

She was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Montrose, SD, to Clara (Ebersviller) and Joseph Flannery. Lavonne attended Montrose, SD public schools, and teacher’s college in Mitchell, SD.

She taught elementary school in Montrose, SD; and country school in DeSmet, SD. While in DeSmet, Lavonne met Frank Hayden. Lavonne and Frank were married Sept. 7, 1950, at Saint Patrick’s Church in Montrose, SD.

After marriage, they made their home in DeSmet, where they farmed. Lavonne and Frank later moved to Renville, MN, residing there for four years. They then moved to Watertown, MN in 1957.

In 1968, Lavonne and Frank purchased the Gambles Hardware Store in Watertown. Together, they operated Gambles and then Hayden Furniture and Appliance.

After they sold their store, Lavonne spent several years managing the apartments at Elim Meadows.

Lavonne loved her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking for others, and always was there with food in times of need or celebration.

Lavonne volunteered with her church, Meals on Wheels, and at the elementary school.

She loved to read, crochet, and play cards, being a member of several bridge clubs. But her most cherished activity was time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lavonne is survived by her children, James (Beverly Ryther) Hayden, Terrance (Terry) Hayden, Barbara (Mark) Hayden Haugen, Michelle (Jay) Hayden Soderberg, and David (Kari) Hayden; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. There was a gathering of family and friends from 9 to 11 a.m., at the church, prior to the Mass. Inurnment was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were with the Iten’s Watertown Funeral Home.

Memorials are preferred to the Watertown Public Library Foundation.
