Marvin Virgil Kumpula, age 88, of Waite Park, formerly of Dassel, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in St. Cloud.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in St. Cloud. Burial will be in the Cokato Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery, Cokato.
There will be visitation Friday, Sept. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, and continuing Saturday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to Grace United Methodist Church in St. Cloud.
Marvin was born May 27, 1928, in Dassel, to Frank and Helmi (Brandstrom) Kumpula.
He married JoAnn K. Bardson Dec. 2, 1950, at Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church in St. Cloud.
Marvin served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a squad leader and platoon sergeant, receiving a Purple Heart.
After his discharge from the Army, Marvin and JoAnn lived in Dassel until 1956, when they moved to St. Cloud. They lived on Long Lake by Clearwater, where Marvin enjoyed fishing, water skiing, snowmobiling and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Marvin and JoAnn moved to Waite Park in December of 2003 for health reasons.
Marvin was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in St. Cloud.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Kumpula of Waite Park; daughters Linda L. (Marlin Birkholz) Paar of Lakeville, and Marsha M (Daniel) Zeller of Anoka; a sister, Verna Anderson of Dassel; five grandchildren, Kari (Julien) Kubesh, Kim (Jeff) Perron, Kristi (Steve) Pawlak, David (Tirzah) Zeller, and Jessica (Andy) LaHoud; eight great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Cole, Arya, Peyton, Isaiah, and Keziah; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law Harold Anderson.
