Shirley Jean Ronning, 81, of Lester Prairie, formerly of Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Auburn Home in Waconia.
She was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Sioux Falls, SD, the daughter of Sidney and Julia (Moen) Smith. Shirley grew up in South Dakota and lived there almost all of her life; she loved living in Sioux Falls.
She graduated from Washington High School in 1953. Shirley then attended Sioux Valley School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1960. She later earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology at the University of Sioux Falls in 2002.
She worked as a registered nurse in Sioux Falls for many years before retiring.
Shirley was united in marriage with Selwyn “Sive” Ronning Nov. 8, 1996, in Deadwood, SD. They were able to travel all over the United States and into Europe, seeing all the places they had dreamed about.
Shirley was a member of the Sioux Valley Alumni, and was the first woman delegate, from Sioux Falls, for the regional and international Cosmopolitan Club. She also served as a board member for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Grateful for having shared her life are five children, Julie Gjerstad and her husband, Clancy, of Lester Prairie, Sidney Larson and his wife, Mary, of Minneapolis, Philip Larson, and his signaficiant other Nema Hussey, of Prescott, AZ, Stephen Larson and his wife, Lisa, of Decorah, IA, and Sarah Dennee and her husband, Richard, of Cheshire, CT; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother; and a host of cousins.
Shirley also shared her life with many longstanding friends, one of which was Fred Torberson, who looked up to her as a mother; and a very dear friend, Roger Haugo.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Selwyn, Sept. 23, 2013; and her parents, Sidney and Julia Smith.
A memorial service took place at George Boom Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Sioux Falls, SD.
