Delores A. ‘Dee’ Smith, age 88, of Mayer, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, at Elim Home in Watertown.
A memorial service will take place Monday, Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer with Rev. Lucas Woodford as officiant. There will be a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia.
Delores was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Edwin and Adeline (Schuettpelz) Gutzke. She was baptized Jan. 29, 1928, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America by Rev. Abraham; and confirmed in her faith April 6, 1941, at the same church with Rev. Kramer officiating.
Dee was united in marriage with Willard Smith March 28, 1951,at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Young America by Rev. Kramer. This union was blessed with two children, Cynthia and John.
Dee and Willard had worked at Bunny’s in St. Louis Park prior to moving in 1961, to manage a supper club in Duluth. In the early 1990s, the couple moved to Mayer.
Dee enjoyed gardening, attending arts and craft shows, and working alongside her husband. She was a devoted church member and cherished the opportunity to worship.
Dee loved getting together with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Adeline Gutzke; husband Willard Smith; son John Smith; sisters and brothers-in-law Elaine and Edwin Wegner, and Darlene and Melvin Boehner; and a brother, Leonard Gutzke.
Dee is survived by her loving family: daughter and son-in-law Cindi and Jeff Fonder of Crystal; grandchildren Cody Fonder of Crystal, Christina Lendfelt of California; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Verna Gutzke; nieces Susan Gutzke, Gwen (Dan) Maxwell, and Deb Boehner; other relatives; and many friends.
