Maria Stallmo, age 81, of Grand Forks, ND, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at her home, after a two-year struggle with lymphoma.
She was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Gebrechtmuehle, Germany, the daughter of Josef and Therese Gottinger. Maria came over to the United States in 1959.
She met Sherman Stallmo in Kansas, and they were united in marriage Aug. 10, 1963. The couple moved to East Grand Forks in 1964.
Maria was a loving mother of two children. She put her family first, above anything else. That is just the kind of woman she was.
She is survived by her husband, Sherman, of Grand Forks, ND; son, James Stallmo of East Grand Forks; daughter, Sandy Stallmo of Howard Lake; three grandchildren, Haley Mahoney (Shaun) of Minneapolis, Kala Phelps of Centennial, CO, and Bradley Bickmann of Howard Lake; and one great-grandchild, Carter, of Centennial, CO.
Maria is further survived by sisters Therese “Resi” Umseher, Christa Fehrer (Gunter Baldini), and Elisabeth Steinberger; nephews Alfons Umseher, Hermann Umseher, and Sigi Fehrer; and niece Beate Dietz, all from Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service took place Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks. There was visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will take place in spring at Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks.
