Marie R. Swisher, age 89, of Darwin, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at her home.
She was born Dec. 12, 1926, in LeLand, Winnebago County, IA, the daughter of Harry and Jennie (Oster) Renicker. Marie was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in her faith as a youth.
She received her education at a country school in Wooden, IA, until the eighth grade. She continued her education in Buffalo Center, IA, and was a graduate of the North Iowa High School class of 1945.
Marie was united in marriage to Ivan Swisher Oct. 28, 1950, at Grant Church in Winnebago County, IA. This marriage was blessed with three children, Rhonda, Eileen, and James.
Marie and Ivan in Ellsworth Township, Darwin, and shared 54 years of marriage until Ivan passed away June 20, 2004.
Marie was employed at Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home for five years, and 3M Company in Hutchinson for over 22 years. She retired in 1989.
She was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Ellsworth Township, Meeker County, where she served with Ladies Aid, and taught Sunday school.
Marie helped the 3M Retirement Club organize charities and leisure activities, and also did volunteer work for many years at Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home.
She enjoyed tending to her garden, crocheting, and loved to travel. She especially cherished spending time with her family, grandchildren, and friends.
Marie is survived by her children, Rhonda J. Brown and her husband, Miles of Westfield, IA, Eileen M. Curtis and her husband, Peter of Oregon, WI, and James M. Swisher and his wife, Jill Underhill of Darwin; four grandchildren, Richard R. Brown, Peter M. Curtis, Katie L. Curtis, and Samuel I. Swisher; and two great-grandchildren, Carson Brown and Cael Brown;
In addition to her husband, Ivan, Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Jennie Renicker; grandchild, Meggann Brown; sisters, Irene Nelson, and Alice Jandl; and brother, Martin Renicker.
Funeral services took place Saturday, June 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ellsworth Township, Darwin, with interment in the Ellsworth Cemetery.
There was visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
