Ruben Vollrath, 89

Ruben J. Vollrath, age 89, of New Germany, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at the Buffalo Hospital.

He was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Hollywood Township, the son of Adolph and Johanna (Speigner) Vollrath. Ruben was baptized Oct. 17, 1926, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hollywood Twp., New Germany by the Rev. Ernst; and confirmed March 17, 1940, by the same.

Ruben was united in marriage to Delores Lemke June 17, 1952, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany, by the Rev. Pfotenhauer.

Ruben worked at Advanced Machine as a machinist for over 30 years.

He was a proud veteran, and a lifetime member of the New Germany American Legion Post 601.

Ruben was a member of the New Germany Fire Department, serving for over 20 years.

In his spare time, he liked playing sheephead, making coffee at the Heritage Square in Howard Lake for bingo, and watching the Gophers, Twins and Vikings.

Ruben had a sweet tooth, never turning away a dessert – his favorite being chocolate. He liked being at his house on Cedar Lake in Annandale taking in all of nature.

Ruben enjoyed polka dancing with his wife, Delores, whenever they had a chance. In his younger days, you could find Ruben on an area lake trying to catch “the big one.”

Ruben was preceded in death by his wife, Delores; brothers Elmer, Raymond and Marvin Vollrath; and sister Ruth Peterson.

He is survived by his loving family; children Douglas (Kathy) Vollrath of Cokato, Brenda (James) Menter of Lincoln, NE, and DuWayne (Gaye) Vollrath of Chaska; grandchildren Jeffrey Vollrath, Shiloh (Janalynn) Menter, Judah (Ally) Menter, Jamin Menter and fiancée Lindsay, Ariann (Mike) Reinmiller, Luke Menter, Joel (Rachel) Menter, and Jesse Menter and fiancée Beccah; and five great-grandchildren.

Ruben is further survived by his brothers, Howard Vollrath of Silver Lake, Norman (Annette) Vollrath of Ray, MN, and Edwin Vollrath of Coon Rapids; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law La Jean Herman of Princeton, Vernon Lemke of Garrison, and Ruth Lemke of Glencoe; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Ruben’s funeral service took place Tuesday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

There was visitation Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Casket bearers were Joel Lemke, Dean Lemke, John Herman, Jim Menter, Steve Vollrath, and Jeffrey Vollrath.

The Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia handled the arrangements.
