Gary Mac Wadding, age 74, of Watertown, left his family and friends to be with the love of his life, Elaine; Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Gary died of a broken heart.
He was born Nov. 19, 1942, in Albert Lea, the son of Mac and Viola (Culver) Wadding. Gary was baptized in Wells, and confirmed his faith in Albert Lea.
After attending the Albert Lea High School, Gary enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for 12 years until his honorable discharge. His love for his country continued by being a lifetime member of the Waconia VFW, where he had served as Post commander.
Gary was united in marriage with Elaine Opsahl March 10, 1972. The couple lived in Watertown, where they raised eight children.
Gary was employed at the Waconia Good Samaritan Center for over 20 years.
He enjoyed doing things with Elaine, including going to Branson, MO, and sometimes taking friends along. He always looked forward to this trip as he loved country music.
Gary loved all of his special grandchildren very much. He enjoyed having them around and doing things with them. He also loved teasing them; they meant everything to him. His whole family was so important to him; Gary enjoyed being able to share time with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mac and Viola Wadding; daughter Mary Sliva; grandson Adam Markuson; brother Wallace Jacobson; and sisters Ellen Adams and Betty Kennedy.
Gary is survived by his loving family: children Jerry (Pat) Markuson of Brooklyn Park, Gwen (Jon) Aaberg of Lakeville, Chris (Valerie) Markuson of Fridley, Robin Mochinski (special friend: Britt Oliverius) of Cologne, Lori (Barry) Pawelk of Montrose, Kevin (Jodi) Markuson of Champlin, and Tom (Anna) Wadding of Pine City; 21 grandchildren: Melissa (Jesus) Lopez Sanchez, Brad (Amber) Hoppe, Brian (Kim) Hoppe, Bobbie Aaberg, Jesse Aaberg, Samantha Jobe, Alayna Markuson, Jennifer Mochinski, Toni Mochinski, Joshua (Hali) Kerwood, Bobby Richardson, Christopher Williams, Crystal Sliva, Angela Sliva, Dan (Alyssa) Pawelk, Casey Pawelk, Justin Markuson, Kayla Markuson, Jenna Lovins, Emily Wadding, Ethan Wadding; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by a sister, Marion Morningstar of Wyoming; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Eleanor Worden of Litchfield, Mae and Elroy Schuette of Hutchinson; and Dick Temple of South Haven; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service took place Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia with the Rev. Paul Krentz as officiant. There was visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Gary’s grandchildren served as his casket bearers.
Memorials are preferred to the Carver County Veterans Memorial and Registry or the American Cancer Society.
