Barb Zimmerman, 65

Barbara Ann Hess Zimmerman, age 65, of Winsted, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

She was born July 29, 1950, in Cokato, the third of nine children born to Pete and Kelly Hess.

According to her husband, Sam, she chased him for quite a while and when she finally caught him, they were united in holy matrimony Aug. 17, 1968, after which Barb spent the next 46 years trying to tame him. They were blessed with three children: Matt, Clare and Pete, and made Winsted their lifelong home.

Aside from her honorable career as a wife, mother, and homemaker, Barb had numerous part-time jobs in her life where she made her mark on so many people.

Most notable of these jobs was that of seamstress extraordinaire. Barb spent countless hours at her sewing machine making clothes for her kids, hemming pants, replacing zippers, and altering dresses for the many brides, bridesmaids, and prom goers whose dresses were a bit too snug for dancing. There were times where she would work until the wee hours of the morning, providing her services always with a smile, sass, and at a very affordable price.

In September of 2012, Barb suffered a massive heart attack followed by two strokes, leaving her greatly debilitated, and suddenly thrusting Sam into the role of caretaker. The family joked that she had taken care of him for 40-plus years, so now it was his turn. Sam never hesitated to step up to the plate, and together, they fought her failing health over the next few years.

On May 25, 2016, her body finally won the battle with her stubbornness. She passed away much like she lived her life, quietly, peacefully and surrounded by Sam, her children and her sister whom she lovingly referred to as “My Little Patty.”

Barb was preceded in death by infant siblings Susie and Pete; her parents, Pete and Kelly Hess; parents-in-law Lenny and Lou Zimmerman; brothers-in-law Ron and Dick Zimmerman; and best friend, Caron Hirsch.

She is survived by her husband, Larry (“Sam”); children Matt (Vanessa) Zimmerman, Clare (Chris) Uecker, and Pete (Heather) Zimmerman; grandchildren Jessie and Nikki Zimmerman, Jolie, Erin and Jack Uecker, and Alex, Grant and Eric Zimmerman; six siblings; and 20 nieces and nephews.

An open house gathering took place June 5, where everyone toasted Barb one last time. She was loved by many, and will be missed.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
