David was born June 27, 1924, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Henry and Christine Battig. He was the youngest of the family of four.
Dave served honorably in World War II in the Army Air Corp on the Pacific Front, from 1943 to 1945. He was in a support position in the Philippines, Guam, New Guinea, and other places; some of the time under General George MacArthur. In recent years, Dave compiled a detailed account of those war years.
He was employed at Honeywell for 43 years as a quality control engineer and inspector.
Dave married Shirley Cramer in 1976, and they were married for 39 happy years.
Dave had many talents and a wry sense of humor. He was an avid reader, collector, poet, master woodworker, gardener, carpenter, and he loved fixing up old bikes to give away to the neighborhood kids. His children and stepchildren all felt that he could fix up and do just about anything.
History was another interest of his. Dave was the president of the Wright County Historical Society in 1994, 1997, and 1998; and a board member from 1992 to 2007. He jokingly sometimes referred to it as the “Hysterical Society.”
Dave was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Jim Smith; step-son Tom Cramer; and older sister, Lucille, who passed away one and one-half years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Barbara Smith of Brooklyn Park, Karla Bergstrom (John) of Dassel, Kathleen Graff of Tampa, FL, and Virginia Battig of Buffalo; and stepchildren Debra Holcombe (Jim) of Buffalo, Kelly Cramer (Sue) of Anoka, and Kevin Cramer of Crystal.
