Melanie R. Dressel, 54

Melanie R. Dressel, age 54, of Watertown, passed away Monday, May 15, 2017, at her home in Watertown.

She was born Jan. 21, 1963, in Marshfield, WI, the daughter of the Rev. Jerome and Ruth (Woizeschke) Wohlfeil. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Colby, WI, and confirmed at Valley of Peace Lutheran Church in Hailey, ID, both by her father, Jerome.

Melanie attended elementary schools in Lamar, CO, and Las Animas, CO, and graduated from Cañon City High School (CO) in 1981. While in high school, she played flute in band and earned national honors in the design and drafting program.

She then attended Concordia College in St. Paul, receiving a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in November 1985. Her first teaching position was at Zion Lutheran School in Mayer. She also taught at Trinity Lutheran School, Waconia; Zion Lutheran School, Cologne; and substitute taught at others for a total of 24 years of teaching in Carver County Lutheran schools.

Melanie was united in marriage to Bob Dressel June 17, 1989, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer by her father, and the Rev. Peter Meier. Bob and Melanie had three children: Rochelle, Amanda, and Paul.

In December 2010, Melanie had surgery for a tumor on her spinal cord, which left her with limited mobility. Then in October 2016, Melanie was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Her strength throughout these illnesses was extraordinary, as she relied on God and forever remained a loving and caring wife and mother. She will always be remembered for her gentle, compassionate nature and ability to brighten anyone’s day.

Melanie was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Jerome Wohlfeil; and a brother Paul Wohlfeil.

She is survived by her loving family; husband Bob; children Rochelle Dressel, Amanda Dressel, and Paul Dressel; mother Ruth Wohlfeil of Windom; brothers John (Leslie) Wohlfeil of Jacksonville, AR, and William (Claudia) Wohlfeil of Pullman, WA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ken (Brenda) Dressel of Lyndale, Sue (Dan) Hilden of Forest Lake, Rick (Roxann) Dressel of St. Michael, Diane (Steve) Neddermeyer, and Tim (Teri) Dressel, all of Watertown; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

A memorial service took place Friday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev Paul Krentz officiating. Interment was at Watertown Public Cemetery.

There was visitation Thursday, May 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, and Friday one hour prior to the service.
