Michael J. Mitchell, age 76, of Howard Lake, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.
A Celebration of Life, open to the public, will take place Saturday, Nov. 18 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the South Shore Meeting Center (the old “Muni”) in Howard Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials/contributions made out to the family are preferred.
Mike was well-known for his athletic abilities growing up, not only locally but in neighboring state colleges. His passion for basketball, baseball, and football were all things he enjoyed.
After playing amateur baseball for the Orphans for many years, Mike was named president of the Orphans Baseball team. He was later inducted into the North Star League Hall of Fame in 2009.
Mike was also the one who helped with the upkeep and improvements of Memorial Park’s ballfield; you could find him there working on little projects almost on a daily basis. He loved working at the park.
Mike dedicated his life to helping others, serving as a police officer in Minneapolis, and K9 officer in New Hope for 25 years. His K9 partners, Samson and Joe, were considered his best companions, not only on the job but also at home.
Mike also was an active council member for the City of Howard Lake at the time of his death.
Hobbies he enjoyed included fishing, boating, traveling, visiting casinos, watching old-time western and classic movies, listing to good ol’ “cowboy” music (top favorites were the Duke and Elvis), and just staying busy.
A wonderful man, Mike stood for so much. His legacy will remain in his family’s hearts forever, and he will be greatly missed.
Mike is survived by his parents, Don and Dorothy Mitchell; wife, Valerie; daughters Cindy (Darwin) Zitzloff, and Kimberly Mitchell; granddaughter, Cheyenne; sisters, Donna (Randy) Lindquist, and Linda (Jim) Stavros; and many other relatives and friends.
