Mathias Schaust, Jr., 64

Mathias Stephen Schaust Jr. (Matty), passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017 at the age of 64.

Matty was born to parents Mathias S. Sr. and Estelle H. Schaust July 31, 1953 in Buffalo, MN.

He grew up as the second of seven on farms in Delano and then at Hollywood Twp. He attended St. Peter catholic grade school and Hollywood Dist. #76, graduating in 1972 from Watertown-Mayer High School.

The cremation and scattering of ashes will be private. A Celebration of Life Open House is planned for Sunday Oct 15, 2017 from 1 to 4 p.m. All are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers we ask that any memorials be made to Eric Tschimperle so that they can be contributed to a fund that Matty started for his granddaughter’s college education.

Matty was always a kind soul with empathy for people. He loved animals and children and they loved him. He played Santa well, even though his tummy was too small, because his heart was more than big enough.

Matty was a scrapper. All his life this trait was on display. From his early life he showed his strength and determination. He was sick as a young man with rheumatic fever but once he was healthy there was no stopping him.

His scrappiness and hard work ethic served him well once he knew that he couldn’t work inside walls. He needed and wanted to be outside as much as possible. He worked hard. His jobs were labor intensive like his early years helping on the family farm, working tough jobs like laying blocks, running his own construction clean up business and tending Christmas trees to name a few. He was never afraid to get dirty and put in the hours.

His scrappiness and hard work ethic continued into his summer pastime of softball. He played as hard as he worked. Matt and brother Mike, along with Matt Sr. combined for a few seasons with younger brothers Ed, John and Dennis. These days were highlights for Matty – he loved family.

In August 1982 his son Eric was born. Pride now beamed each time he spoke of this little boy and continued until his last days which by then included Eric’s family.

Matty had a habit of showing up FIRST for events. He would often show up before anyone else to enjoy the calm and typically get a dog settled in comfy like. He loved to visit with anyone and everyone and then quietly take off when things got rolling. He liked his privacy and his quiet lifestyle.

Up North was Matty’s sanctuary and home. In the trees, no TV needed – he had the sky and the stars.

His last days were spent with his sister Lynn and her hubby Randy in New Auburn, WI where they opened their home so Matty could be close to family, wide open spaces and the nature that he loved.

Mathias is survived by his son Eric Tschimperle (Morgan Hanson), granddaughters Rue and Wren. He is further survived by his parents Matt Sr. and Estelle Schaust, siblings Lynn (Randy Wendt), Mike (Lori), Ed (MaryJo), John (Barb), Dennis, and Becky (Jim Bakken).
