Shirley J. Schwan, 93

Shirley Jean Schwan, age 93, of Delano, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at The Estates of Delano.

She was born Aug. 25, 1924, the daughter of Christopher and Ina Mern (Randolph) Hvidhyld.

Shirley attended grade school in the Florence, SD area. At the age of 12, she moved to a boarding house in town where she lived during her days at Florence High School.

Shirley attended the School of Cosmetology in Sioux Falls, SD. Her lifelong beauty career started with employment at Shoop’s Beauty Salon in Aberdeen, SD.

Shirley was united in marriage to Francis J. Schwan Sept. 23, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen, SD. To this union, four children were born; David, Wanetta, Susan and Christopher.

The couple lived in Aberdeen, with a brief two-year residency in Stratford, SD.

After the children were in school, Shirley went back to beauty work at Shoops. She opened her own shop, Shirley’s Clip & Curl, the summer of 1967, where she was known to give the best shampoo in town. Shirley enjoyed making the women of Aberdeen beautiful for 42 years.

A champion for her profession, Shirley once wrote a letter to the White House, and applied to be the White House beauty consultant for First Lady Barbra Bush.

At 70, Shirley started her second career, manager of the fabric department at Walmart. Sewing and needlework, enjoyable pastimes of hers, made this job a delight to go to each day. She will always be remembered for her stellar customer service, her beautiful smile, and cheerful personality.

At 77, Shirley moved to Maple Plain, to be close to her children. She took residence at Maple Terrace, where she lived for more than a decade enjoying her children and many grand- and great-grandchildren.

Shirley was a dedicated Catholic Daughter for many years, holding office and working with the organization of Catholic women on many church and community projects.

She was a member of the Delano Senior Center, where she served as the event coordinator for many years.

A grand, sweet lady, Shirley was filled with joy, the best grandmother, and favorite aunt. She wore lots of colorful hats, and wrote beautiful letters.

A strong woman, Shirley was always encouraging and giving to others. Her family considers her a gem, and she will always be remembered.

Preceding Shirley in death were her parents, Christopher and Ina Hvidhyld; husband, Francis Schwan; sister, Erma (Gerald) Murphy; daughter-in-law Catherine (Gadbois) Schwan; and son-in-law Stephen M. State.

Grateful for having shared Shirley’s life are her children, David (Maureen) Schwan of Coon Rapids, Wanetta (Bobby Joe) Penning of Minnetrista, and Corwith, IA, Susan (Randall) Weestrand of Orono, and Christopher (Elise) Schwan of Hutchinson; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a brother, William (Ruth) Hvidhyld of St. Paul.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen, SD, with Father Grant Lacey as the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

There was visitation Wednesday, Dec. 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen, with a wake and rosary service at 6 p.m.
