Willis F. Leistiko, age 75, of Mayer, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Young America, the son of William and Hulda (Schmidt) Leistiko. Willis was baptized into the faith as an infant, and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown.
Willis was united in marriage to Janice Latzig Feb. 2, 1962, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany.
Willis was extremely proud of his family; therefore, family get-togethers had a special place in his heart. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events or anything else they had going on. While his grandchildren were growing up, he enjoyed taking them to miniature putt-putt around the area.
At 16, Willis began his truck driving career. He started as a milk truck driver, then Tonka Toys, Quast Transfer/Vitran, and most recently, Water’s Edge Transportation; a job that gave him great joy. And if you ever need directions (anywhere), Willis was the one to ask.
Willis had a tender heart, very empathetic to anyone else’s situation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, listening to old tyme music, and watching the Minnesota Twins. One of his favorite pastimes was playing sheephead with his group of friends.
Willis was a perfectionist; everything was impeccable relating to his lawn, house, or car.
He served as an usher at St. John’s Lutheran Church for a number of years.
Willis was preceded in death by his son, Mylo Leistiko; parents William and Hulda Leistiko; step-mother Rosella Leistiko; brother Herman Leistiko; father-in-law Elmer Latzig; and sister-in-law Sherry Latzig.
He is survived by the love of his life, Janice Leistiko; daughters Cheryl (Anthony) Buesgens of Chaska, and Betty (Mel) Sprengeler of Plato; sister Katherine (Loren) Baumann of Mayer; sister-in-law Darlene Leistiko of Norwood Young America; mother-in-law Leona Latzig of Waconia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law DuWayne Latzig of Winsted, Joanne (Gene) Sauter of Chaska, Kevin Latzig (Sue Alberts) of New Germany, Joyce (Steve) Kuntz of Watertown; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Willis’ funeral service took place Wednesday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America, with the Rev. Eric Hutchison officiating. Interment was at Mau Cemetery in Norwood Young America.
