Don Mitchell, age 96, a life-long resident of Howard Lake, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 31, 2018.
Don married Dorothy Workman, his high school sweetheart, in 1940. They were married 77 years.
During World War II, Don served in the US Navy. After the war, Don returned to Howard Lake and began his career at the Howard Lake post office, where he worked for 20 years.
Under Don’s leadership, the Howard Lake baseball team was restarted in 1947. Throughout his life, Don was a dedicated supporter of the Howard Lake Orphans baseball league.
Don and Dorothy enjoyed “wintering” in Arizona, and traveling throughout the Southwest.
Don started each day by taking long walks around town. His summer months were spent listening to the Minnesota Twins, attending Orphans baseball games, and working in his large vegetable garden, which he continued to maintain until last summer.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son Mike; and sister Dorothy Jane.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Jim) Stavros, and Donna (Randy) Lindquist; loving grandchildren, Cindy, Kim, Angie, Liza, Chris, and Anne; and seven beloved great-grandchildren.
A “Celebration of Life” will take place at a later date.
