Joseph “Joe” A. Nelson, age 79, of Darwin, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Private family services will take place, with Chaplain Roger Klinghagen officiating. Special music will include “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.”

Joe was born Feb. 9, 1939, in Litchfield, the son of Roy and Martha (Larson) Nelson.
He was united in marriage to Marie Hagen, and they were blessed with three daughters, Tammie, Julie, and Sharie. Joe and Marie have resided in the Darwin area since 1959.
Joe built a successful tree business called Nelson Tree Service in Darwin. He was a tree trimmer in the Darwin area for several years, which he loved doing, and was known by many as “Joe, the Tree Trimmer.”
Joe enjoyed playing checkers and chess, fishing, and taking his grandchildren to carnivals. He most recently became very interested in watching old western movies. He cherished the time spent with his family, grandchildren, and friends.
A big man with a heart to match, Joe loved his family with his whole heart and was always there for them when needed.
He became a resident at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson March 7, when he needed assistance with his daily care.
Joe is survived by his wife, Marie Nelson of Darwin; children, Tammie Nelson, Julie Nelson, both of Litchfield, and Sharie Dvorak and her husband, James, of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Joseph Vega, and Brandi Nelson; and five great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by siblings, Elaine Nelson of California, Dorothy Stimack of Rice, and Glenn Nelson of Bloomington; and many other relatives and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Martha Nelson.
