John Richard Vansteenburg (JR, Pooh Bear, Johnnie, Little John, Johnny D, Steemer), age 40, of Alaska, formerly of Delano, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at his home, one day before his 41st birthday. A lifelong Minnesotan, he spent the past three years in Alaska.
There will be a funeral service Friday, May 18 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Elk River, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to the service.
John has been cremated and will be buried with his mother. Burial date has yet to be scheduled.

John was born in Minneapolis, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. He grew up playing hockey, and causing mischief with neighbors on Honeytree Drive in Delano.
He graduated from Elk River High School, and was employed at Hall Quality Homes, where he worked as a laborer.
John was a member of a deer camp, as well as Team Marilyn (a group of family and friends raising awareness and funds for breast cancer causes).
He enjoyed card games, cheering on Minnesota sports teams, hunting, fishing, playing with his cat, Tubbs; and spending time with family.
John will be remembered for his kind heart, humor, infectious laugh, and ability to prevail over life’s challenges. He was always the life of the party.
He is survived by his father, George Vansteenburg (wife Cathy); sister Gwenn Haller (husband John, son Hunter, daughter Jozie); and sister Kara Schmitz (husband Nathan, daughter Audrey, son Vince).
John was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Vansteenburg; aunts Joyce Markegard, and Patricia Hogan; and his grandparents.
