James Glenn Burkett, age 84, of Winsted, formerly of Waverly, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
A memorial service will take place Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church of Howard Lake.
There will be visitation Monday, Nov. 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake; continuing Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.

James was born April 7, 1935, in Kell, IL, to James and Minnie (Burke) Burkett. He grew up in Rock Falls, IL, and graduated from high school there in 1953.
Following high school, he went to work at various jobs, and then entered the US Army. James served from 1961 to 1963, mostly at the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, CO.
James married LaVonne Elaine Anderson Nov. 24, 1962, in Denver. After service in the army, the couple moved to Rochelle, IL, then to Sioux City, IA; and then Waverly, MN.
James was a rural letter carrier in Buffalo, retiring in 1999.
In the summer, James could often be found on the lake. He loved fishing, and telling tales about fishing. He also liked to go on road trips, play cards, and do wood working projects.
He was an avid reader, and enjoyed attending school and youth sporting events. James liked to make others laugh by telling jokes, teasing, and telling tall tales.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne; children: Mark Burkett, James K. (Cheryl) Burkett, Bobbie (Tarmo) Kubits, Lori (Larry) Mullesch, Terry (Judy) Burkett, and Jodi (Dale) Altringer; 15 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Gary (Jane) Anderson.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Minnie Burkett; an infant son, Craig; grandson James Earl; and his seven siblings.
