Florence Cardinal, 100

Florence Elizabeth (Babatz) Cardinal, age 100, of Montrose, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at her home, with family by her side.

She was born June 2, 1919, on a farm in Watertown, the daughter of John and Mary (Ceryes) Babatz.

Florence graduated from Montrose High School in 1938, and continued her education at beauty school in Minneapolis.

Florence and Ervin J. Cardinal were joined in holy marriage Nov. 21, 1939, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with six children.

Florence owned and operated “Cardinal Beauty Salon” for more than 50 years. She loved meeting new customers and enjoyed conversations with long-time customers. Florence attended several “stylist” conventions during her career so she could keep educated at the newest techniques for hair cuts and styles.

She was a long-time, faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.

Florence enjoyed spending time with family; visiting and having visitors. She looked forward to the yearly family get-togethers at her house during the Christmas holidays.

She always needed to have a garden of vegetables – even this year, when she turned 100 years old, and enjoyed many years of fishing with Ervin and family members. Florence and Ervin traveled the USA in their motorhome when they retired.

Florence helped Ervin on their farm land when she wasn’t working in her beauty shop. She “enjoyed” sitting in her “three season deck” and admired the beautiful view. She also had occasionally admitted to spending some time “playing the slot machines.”

Florence is survived by her children: Gerald Cardinal of Buffalo, Nancy (Barrett) Hamlink of Cokato, Jeffrey (Debra) Cardinal, and Colleen (Greg) Donovan, all of Buffalo; daughter-in-law, Candy Cardinal of Cokato: nine grandsons: Christopher Cardinal, Anthony Cardinal, Daniel Cardinal, Timothy Cardinal, Thomas Cardinal, Gerad Cardinal, Jonathan Donovan, Nathan Donovan and Kenneth Segler; and five granddaughters: Julie Morrow, Jill Schrupp, Sarah Cardinal, Charity Donovan and Jessie Donovan.

In addition, she is survived by 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen “Sis” (Marvin) Scheuble of Montrose; sister-in-law Norma Babatz of Spring Lake Park; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas Cardinal July 1, 1970; and Steven Cardinal Sept. 22, 1997; husband Ervin J. Cardinal Dec. 1, 2006; her parents, John and Mary Babatz; brothers William Babatz, and John (Jack) Babatz; and sisters Mary Motzko, Agnes Pfeifer, and Margaret Salonek.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with vistation from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the church, prior to Mass. Father Kenneth O’Hotto was the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were her grandsons, Kenneth Segler and Nathan Donovan.

Casket bearers were grandsons Anthony, Daniel, Timothy, Thomas and Gerad Cardinal, and Jonathan Donovan.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family. Online condolences may be made to www.thepetersonchapel.com.
