Vernon ‘Sam’ Domjahn, 88

Vernon Herbert Emil (“Sam”) Domjahn, age 88, of New Germany, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

He was born Feb. 20, 1930, in Camden Township, rural New Germany, the only child of Herbert and Hilda (Schuette) Domjahn; and raised on the five-generation family farm

Vernon was baptized March 16, 1930, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theo Rolf; and confirmed April 2, 1944, at the same church, by the Rev. John Meyer.

He attended country school through eighth grade.

Vernon was united in marriage to Nedra Herrmann May 24, 1951, at St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Hamburg. They were blessed with three children; Cheryl, Sheldon, and Sharlene.

Vernon and Nedra lived on the family farm until 1985, when they moved to a home in New Germany. Vernon continued to farm until 1994.

Over the years, Vernon also worked part-time jobs driving school bus, hauling milk, working on a county road crew, at a sawmill, for Surge milk, and selling seed corn and bartending.

He enjoyed fishing with his friends or spending a week at a cabin up north. Vernon also liked watching the Twins, playing cards, and going to old tyme dances.

He played dart ball for St. Mark Lutheran Church, and served on the church finance committee.

Vernon enjoyed reminiscing about threshing bees and family butchering sessions.

After 61 years of marriage, Nedra passed away in 2013. Vernon has missed her ever since.

In addition to his wife, Nedra, Vernon was preceded in death by his father and mother, Herbert and Hilda Domjahn; father-in-law and mother-in-law Erwin and Erna Herrmann; and brother-in-law Harold Barlau.

Vernon is survived by his loving family: children and spouses Cheryl and Jeff Hedtke of Norwood Young America, Sheldon Domjahn of New Germany, and Sharlene and Philip Rehmann of Winsted; grandchildren Carrie (Matt) Vasecka, and Kristina Domjahn and special friend Shawn Zellman; great-grandson Skyler Vasecka; sister-in-law Elrena Barlau of Plymouth; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dale and Jane Herrmann of Oakdale; nieces Beth Barlau and Denise (Tom) Burosh; former daughter-in-law Michelle Domjahn; and other relatives and friends.

Vernon’s funeral service took place Monday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment was at St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery.

There was visitation at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service.

Casket bearers were Matt Vasecka, Scott Karels, Mark Karels, Steve Ostlie, Orrin Herrmann, and Dale Herrmann.
