Shirley A. Enger, 78

Shirley Ann (McKay) Enger, age 78, of Rockford passed away Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

A memorial service for friends and family will take place Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at Our Father’s Lutheran Church, 3903 Gilbert Ave. SE, Rockford. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Our Father’s Lutheran Church Foundation.

Shirley was born March 2, 1941, in Minneapolis, to Clifford and Ruth McKay (Dahlstrom), and was the oldest of five children.

After graduating from Hopkins High School in 1959, she met the love of her life, V. Curtis Enger, and they were married Feb. 17, 1962, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hopkins.

Curt and Shirley moved to Rockford, and raised three children; Paul, Melanie and Christopher.

Shirley was a humanitarian, and altruistic in every aspect of her life. When help was needed, she was already behind you to share her time and talents.

She worked for SuperValu, Prudential law department, and 23 years as the secretary at Our Fathers Lutheran Church. She was a member of MN State Parks Passport Club, and a volunteer at Riverworks-Food Shelf, and Meals on Wheels.

Shirley’s passions included camping, bird watching, sewing, reading, and spending time with her family, and she was a formidable, sharp-eyed agate hunter.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 57 years, V. Curtis Enger; children Paul, Melanie (Greg) Elstad, and Chris (Christine) Enger; siblings Janet Hamilton, Mary Larson, David McKay, and Bruce McKay; grandchildren Justin, Katelyn, and Madison Elstad, and Tanner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Ruth McKay; and brothers-in-law Robert Hamilton, and A. Douglas Larson.
