Matthew Mark Hertzog, age 63, of Winsted, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at his home.
He was born Dec. 27, 1955, in Winsted, the son of Melchoir “Mel” and Mary Ann (Hiller) Hertzog.
Matthew honorably served his country in the United States Navy.
He was formerly employed for many years as a meat cutter.
Matthew enjoyed trail riding with his dad, never letting his kids win at pool, watching sunsets on the lake, and roasting hotdogs over the campfire.
He belonged to American Legion Post 407, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, and to Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
Matthew is survived by his children, Thomas Hertzog of Minneapolis, and Carly Hertzog of San Diego, CA; sisters and brothers Julie (Steve) Millerbernd of Winsted, Mary Kay (Roger) Fasching of Rogers, Charlie (Becky) Hertzog of Waverly, Frank Hertzog of St. Cloud, Bruce (Carol) Hertzog of Brandon, and Melchoir “Mel” (Karen) Hertzog of Greybull, WY; as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by brothers Dale and David Hertzog.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, March 27 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, with Father Tony Stubeda as the celebrant. Lavon Kielkucki was the organist for the Mass. Inurnment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
There was a time of gathering at the church prior to the Mass, beginning at 10 a.m.
Matthew’s daughter, Carly Hertzog, was the urn bearer.
