Phyllis Audrey Johnson (Nelson), age 95, of Edina, formerly of Darwin, passed away Friday, April 12, 2019, in her home, with loving family by her side.
A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, May 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Interlachen Country Club, 6200 Interlachen Blvd. in Edina.
Phyllis grew up in Darwin, and attended Dassel High School, where she met her husband of 56 years, Ellsworth, who passed away in 1999.
Edina was her home for most of her life.
Family was very important to Phyllis, and she loved attending family celebrations, dinners, cruises, and vacations.
Her life’s passion was travel, which included trips to all continents; and she traveled into her 90s. Her favorite travel was to Hawaii, which fittingly was the destination of her last trip. Her motto: “Have bag will travel.”
Always committed to education, Phyllis earned a number of degrees. Professionally, she held various positions in banking, including that of banking examiner. She also held a Real Estate license.
Phyllis was an avid volunteer, from Scouting to League of Women Voters. She was also a foster parent to 14 children through Lutheran Social Services.
Having an active social life with bridge, dinner, dance groups and the Women’s Club, Phyllis’ calendar was always full.
She will be lovingly remembered for her great smile, sense of humor, her drive, and her generosity.
Phyllis was preceded in death by a son, Elwood (1957).
She is survived by three children, Christine (Steve) Ullom, Elizabeth (Paul) Milne, and Eric Johnson (Darlene Pike).
Phyllis had six grandchildren: Julie (Mike) Ewasiuk, Kelsey Milne (William Tanberg), Scott Milne, Caroline Ullom (Joe Carroll), Allison (Ben) Paul and Kevin Milne. She earned the nickname GG when her first great-grandchild was born.
