David J. Roufs Obituary – 1/29/2019


David James Roufs, age 72, of Elko-New Market, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at Lakewood Reflections in Staples.

He was born Jan. 11, 1947, in Minneapolis, the son of Herbert H. and Helen M (Kleber) Roufs.

David graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Winsted in 1965. In 1969, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in education.

David honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. He was a Viet Nam veteran.

David was joined in holy marriage with Susan M. Painschab July 26, 1969, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with six children.

David valued a hard day’s work and took much pride in giving his best. This was also a value he instilled in all of his children. He spent 21 years in education, and ended his working career giving all of his handyman advice while working for Menards.

David belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, and formerly sang in the church choir at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Arlington. He was also a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.

David enjoyed singing, music, camping, woodworking, and gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan M. Roufs; children: Eric Roufs and fiancée Kimberly Taylor, Jarrod (Rae) Roufs, Tara (Troy) Breyer, Jessica (Marcus) Kohman, and Dominic (Alicia) Roufs; 11 grandchildren: Selena and Connor; Ava, Liam, Grayson and Addison; Gillian and Braden; Brody and Natalie; and Herbert; brothers Donald (Sue) Roufs, Richard (Myra) Roufs, and Dennis (Patty) Roufs; and many other relatives and friends.

David was preceded in death by a daughter, Natalie Roufs, in 2009; his parents; and by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Mary Painschab.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with Father Kenneth O’Hotto as the celebrant.

There was visitation Sunday, Feb. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continued Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

Casket bearers were Eric and Jarrod Roufs, Tara Breyer, Jessica Kohman, Dominic Roufs, and Selena Roufs.

Memorials may be given to Alzheimer’s Research.
