If you wish to honor Helen, and in lieu of memorials, the family asks that you arrange to have a Mass said for Helen and Roger Smith in your own parish church. Helen would be delighted by your prayers and this heartfelt remembrance.
Helen was born April 9, 1929, in Delano, to John and Matilda Theisen. One of seven children, Helen was a happy and diligent worker, doing whatever was needed to help her family on their farm.
She married Roger G. Smith July 7, 1947, in Buffalo, and the couple moved to New Ulm, where they worked together and raised their four children, David, Ron, Donna and Joan.
As her children grew up, Helen worked for Kraft Industries for many years. She enjoyed getting together with family and friends, pretending to be a “Motorcycle Grandmama” on her grandson’s Harley, listening to country music (especially Elvis Presley), dancing, and watching the parades as they passed by her home over the years.
She loved visiting with her grandchildren and was a gentle, loving grandmother except when she was teaching her grandkids to make lefse. Then, she instantly transformed into a tough-as-nails Army drill sergeant.
Helen is survived by three children: Dave Smith, Donna (Neal) Forsyth, and Joan (Bill) Wager; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; a son, Ronald; her parents; and her brothers and sisters.
