Floyd Sneer, formerly of Winsted, passed away Nov. 2, 2019.
Floyd was born July 7, 1928, son of Lou and Molly Sneer of Mountain Lake.
He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mountain Lake.
Floyd graduated in June 1946 from Mountain Lake High School, and attended Gustavus Adolphus College. He also completed a Minnesota Newspaper Association skills course.
Floyd married JoAnn Jensen May 27, 1951, at First Lutheran Church in St. James.
Floyd’s first job was at the age of 14 at the Mountain Lake Observer. He covered school news and sports, and was a columnist. In his words, he was a “general flunky.”
He also worked at the Hibbing Daily Tribune, Duluth News Tribune, Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch, Bird Island Union, and Tyler Journal, before purchasing the Winsted Journal in 1961. He later bought and also published the Lester Prairie Journal, and Howard Lake Herald.
Floyd was very active in the Winsted community. He served as a councilman for nine years, and was mayor for two years. He was also Winsted’s industrial development director.
He served on the Winsted School Board, Pioneerland Library Board, Ridgeview College Curriculum Board, St. Mary’s Nursing Home Board, Southwest Minnesota Economic Development Board, McLeod County HRA Board, and was a life member of the Winsted Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge from 1951 until his death.
Floyd was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, until he moved to Hueytown, AL to live with his daughter.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents Lou and Molly Sneer, wife JoAnn, sister Violet Gove, and brother-in-law Stan Gove.
He is survived by his son Tim (Dale) Sneer, daughter Brenda Alvis, sister Bev (Ron) Quiring, grandchildren Chris (Rachel) Alvis, Miranda Alvis, Nathan Alvis; and great-grandchildren Nic Price and Ava Clair Alvis.
Floyd was cremated and his ashes will be buried in Winsted at a future date.
