Roland Thiel Obituary – 1/21/2019


Roland William Thiel, age 91, of Lester Prairie, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 21, 2019, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

Funeral services for Roland Thiel will take place Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Pastor Eric Nelson will officiate. Special music will be provided by Chuck Thiel. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Church Cemetery.

Visitation will take place Friday, Jan. 25, one hour prior to services at the church.

A visitation took place Thursday, Jan. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. A prayer service took place at 4 p.m.

Honorary casket bearers were Kristin Sanderson, Angie Parpart, Rick Baumann, Justin Noerenberg, Brad Noerenberg, and Bryan Baumann.

Casket bearers were Charles Parpart, Nicholas Fiecke, Jason Noerenberg, Brandon Kottke, Matthew Kutz, Bob Parpart, Nathan Baumann, and Tim Baumann.

He was born Oct, 1, 1927, in Winsted Township, McLeod County, the son of Gustav and Hulda (Paul) Thiel. Roland grew up in Bergen Township.

Roland was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bergen Township by Pastor Vomhof. His confirmation memory verse was Psalm 143: 10 – “Teach me to do the will for Thou art my God. Let Thy good spirit lead me on a level path.”

He attended school at St. Peter’s Parochial School.

Roland worked many various jobs, and in 1943, he drove a can milk truck. In 1946, he bought his own truck for milk hauling. He later transitioned to bulk milk. In 1985, Roland was out of the milk hauling business.

Roland Thiel and Evangeline “Vangie” Ernst were united in marriage Oct. 9, 1947. God blessed their marriage with five daughters.

In 1975, Roland bought a school bus company from Louis Jenneke for Lester Prairie and Winsted school districts. He continued to operate the bus company until 1995.

Following his retirement, Roland did some charter bus driving for New Ulm Travel, and continued to help out at Prairie Bus Service.

He loved to spend time driving around and seeing many places, and watch Minnesota Twin’s baseball games and his grandchildren grow up.

He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Roland also served on the Lester Prairie Fire Department from 1962 to 1988, and belonged to Lester Prairie Lions Club.

Roland is survived by his loving daughters: Sue (Jim) Noerenberg of New Germany; Shirley Baumann, Sandra Fiecke, Sheila (Jim) Parpart, all of Lester Prairie, and Sharon (Mark) Kottke-Nelson of Winsted; grandchildren: Brad (Jill) Noerenberg, Justin (Leanne) Noerenberg, and Jason Noerenberg, Rick (Lisa) Baumann, Bryan (Jacque) Baumann, Nathan (Melissa) Baumann, and Tim (Lynn) Baumann, Matthew (Jessica) Kutz, Nicholas (Britani) Fiecke, Angela Parpart, Robert (Amy) Parpart, Charles (Summer) Parpart, Kristin (Ben) Sanderson, and Brandon Kottke, special friend Kaylee Langer; 20 great grandchildren: Landon Panning, Tucker Parpart, Knoxon Parpart, Ethen Parpart, Aiden Parpart, Benjamin Sanderson, Alayna Kottke, Brody Kutz, Casey Kutz, Jace Mack, Ellie Noerenberg, Bree Noerenberg, Rylee Noerenberg, Nicole Baumann, Janessa Baumann, Brooke Baumann, Hailey Baumann, Tony Baumann, Ben Baumann, and Alex Baumann; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Ernst and Carol (Ernst-Heigl) Bruckschen; other relatives and many friends.

Roland was preceded in death by his loving wife Evangeline “Vangie” Thiel, his parents, parents-in-law Martin and Anna Ernst, a brother Leonard Thiel, sons-in-law Ronnie Baumann and Larry Kutz, three grandchildren Michael Noerenberg, Melissa Fiecke, and baby girl Kottke, and brothers-in-law Stanley Ernst and Lewis Heigl.
