Mabel Tonn Obituary – 4/30/2019


Mabel Evelyn Marie (Sandquist) Tonn, age 91, of Lester Prairie, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe.

She was born March 11, 1928, in Watertown, the daughter of Sidney and Lillie (Nelson) Sandquist. Mabel was baptized as an infant April 15, 1928, by Pastor LeVander at Swedish Lutheran Church in Watertown; and was confirmed in her faith as a youth May 30, 1943, by the Rev. N. William Anderson at Gotaholm Evangelical (Trinity) Lutheran Church in Watertown.

She received her education in Watertown, graduating with the Watertown High School class of 1946.

Mabel was united in marriage to Marvin Julius Tonn June 2, 1956, by the Rev. N. William Anderson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown. Mabel and Marvin made their home on the family farm near Lester Prairie. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, and three sons; Mary, Michael, Matthew and Maurice.

Mabel and Marvin shared over 57 years of marriage before Marvin passed away Aug. 6, 2013.

In addition to being a loving farm wife, mother, and homemaker, Mabel worked as a waitress and cook at Lindy’s Café in Glencoe, and Jonio’s Pizza in Lester Prairie.

She was an active member at Prairie Community Church in Lester Prairie, where she was a member of the women’s guild. Mabel and Marvin also cleaned the church for many years.

In addition, Mabel was a member of the home Extension group.

Mabel enjoyed talking and socializing with others, attending garage sales, reading and gardening, especially flowers. She loved playing bingo at the nursing home, and was always very proud of her winnings.

She treasured time spent with her family and friends.

Mabel is survived by her daughter, Mary Wilke and husband, Rick, of Hutchinson; sons Michael Tonn and wife, Christina, of Hutchinson, Matthew Tonn and wife, Melissa, of Lester Prairie, and Maurice Tonn and his special friend, Sharon Hittle, of Lester Prairie; grandchildren Adam Wilke and his wife, Bess, Andrew Wilke and his wife, Krystal, Eric Tonn, Cole Tonn, Logan Tonn, Josie Tonn, Trevor Tonn, Megan Tonn, and Jacob Carlson and his fiancée, Jessica Shaw; and great-grandchildren Alma Wilke, Winston Wilke, and Roland Wilke.

She is further survived by a brother, Glen Sandquist of Watertown; sisters Gladys Cornell of Watertown, Lois Severson and her husband, Harold, of Lester Prairie, and Mary Ann Kamann and her husband, Roger, of Waconia; sisters-in-law Eleanor Sandquist of Granite Falls, and Lila Schmidtke and her husband, Dave, of Faribault; nephews, nieces, other relatives, and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Marvin, Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Lillie Sandquist; brother Alvin Sandquist; sister Esther Titrud and her husband, Woodrow; brothers-in-law Donald Cornell, and Herbert Rolf; and sisters-in-law Elsie Sandquist, and Sophia Rolf.

Funeral services took place Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at Prairie Community Church in Lester Prairie, followed by interment at the Lester Prairie City Cemetery. The Rev. Al Fiene officiated at the services. Alice Nowak was the organist. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “In The Garden,” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Mabel’s grandchildren were honorary casket bearers: Adam Wilke, Andrew Wilke, Eric Tonn, Cole Tonn, Logan Tonn, Josie Tonn, Trevor Tonn, Megan Tonn, Jacob Carlson

Casket bearers were Patrick Feltmann, James Klaustermeier, Wayne Severson, Eric Sandquist, Lee Titrud, and Clay Kamann.
