Allen Westerberg, 93

Allen R. Westerberg, age 93, of Burnsville, formerly of Dassel, entered eternal life Sunday, Oct 13, 2019.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4625 W. 125th St., Savage; with visitation Thursday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., ending with a rosary service at 7:45 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., prior to the Mass. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to Sharing and Caring Hands, or St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Savage.

Allen was born Nov. 9, 1925, in Dassel, the son of Hjalmer and Alfreda (Benson) Westerberg.

He grew up in Dassel, and while in high school, he was recruited by the University of Minnesota to maintain the gardens, orchards, and greenhouses at the St. Paul farm campus. His love of flowers and gardening was lifelong, and he would often serve as a judge at the Dassel Flower Show.

Allan married Marcella Fakler Jan. 5, 1963.

He served in the Navy for 25 years, and was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific.

After his service in the Navy, Al became the admitting director at Fairview Southdale hospital in Edina.

Following retirement, he enjoyed gardening, traveling, spending time with his wife, Marcella, his children, grandchildren, and his great-grandson. He was well-known for bringing life to any occasion, and making everyone laugh.

Allen is survived by his wife, Marcella; children, Richard (Karen), Ann (Peter) Conrad, and Joe (Laura); grandchildren, Jonathan (Courtney), Molly, Matthew, Christie, Emma, Bethany and Meghan; great-grandson, Liam; a sister, Annette Schmaedeka; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Alfreda.
