David J. Borrell, 77

David J. Borrell, age 77, of Maple Lake, died Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at his home in Corinna Township, after living with leukemia for eight years.

David Jerome Borrell was born June 11, 1943, in Cokato to Francis and Dorothy (Claessens) Borrell. He grew up in Waverly, and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Waverly with the Class of 1961.

David served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Air Force; he was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in California.

After his honorable discharge, he worked at National Cash Register and Herculift prior to starting his own business, Dave Borrell Refrigeration, Plumbing and Heating. His training in the Air Force served him well in his 47 years as a business owner.

He was united in marriage to Jean Verona Berg at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church in Albion Township December 26, 1980. They lived in rural Maple Lake, where they raised their family.

Dave was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Maple Lake, Waverly American Legion, and the Experimental Aircraft Association in Oshkosh, WI.

Dave loved work and to talk; toward the end of his career, he could often be found working for an hour and socializing for a couple of hours after the job was done. He was in his element when an unusual construction dilemma arose that needed a solution. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, boats, and construction equipment.

Airplanes were a passion of Dave’s; he had his commercial pilot’s license, and was an instructor to countless people out of the Maple Lake Municipal Airport. He enjoyed every minute in the air.

David is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of Maple Lake; sons, Peter of Maple Lake and Paul (Lacey) of Big Lake; three granddaughters, Lexey, Lilly, and Penny; brothers and sisters, Janet Sherman of Southfield, MI, Rose Marie (Michael) Monahan of Richland, WA, Ken (Karen), Patrick, Richard (Patty), Charlie (Lynn), Gene and Jerry (Kay) all of Waverly, and Ginny of Kirbyville, TX; and many other family members, colleagues, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Dorothy; and brothers, Bernard and Michael.

Memorial and graveside services took place at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2020, at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Cemetery in Albion Township, Annandale. A reception and visitation followed from 3 to 7 p.m. at The Hanger at Dick and Patty Borrell’s home on Hwy. 12, just west of Waverly.

Rev. Culynn Curtis officiated at the service. Military Honors were provided by the Waverly American Legion Post 305 and the United States Air Force.

Arrangements were entrusted with Dingmann Funeral Care Burial & Cremation Services of Maple Lake. Obituary, guestbook, video tribute and funeral webcast online at www.dingmannfuneral.com.
