Pat Haapala, 81

Patricia “Pat” Farrell Haapala, age 81, of Dassel, died Sunday, March 15, 2020, at the Augustana Lakeside Health Care Center in Dassel.

A memorial service will take place at a later date at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel. The interment of the urn will be at the Dassel Community Cemetery in Dassel.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to be given to the Dassel Food Shelf.

Pat was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Irwin John and Vera “Hudson” Farrell. She grew up in North East Minneapolis, where she attended Tuttle School and Marshall High School.

Pat was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was presently a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel.

She was united in marriage to James Tex Haapala April 5, 1958, at the University Lutheran Church of Hope in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in Dassel until 1968, when they moved to Belmond, IA.

In 1970, Pat and Tex moved back to Dassel, where they have since made their home.

Pat loved kids. She was an active member of her church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Ladies Circle. She was also active in her community, having served on the Dassel City Council and the Dassel Planning and Zoning Council.

She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; was a wonderful cook and enjoyed trying new recipes, always saving the recipes that tasted good in her cookbooks. Over the years, she had amassed over 100 cookbooks.

Holidays were one of her favorite times of the year. She could often be found in the kitchen cooking and everyone knew that you would never walk away from the table hungry.

Pat had volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader, and was her son’s Cub Scout den mother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Irwin and Vera Farrell; and a brother, John Farrell.

Pat is survived by her husband, James Tex Haapala; children, Deborah (Paul) Burandt, and Jonathan (Heidi) Haapala, all of Dassel; grandchildren Nicholas (Jenna) Burandt, Lesley Burandt, Jordan Haapala, and Grant Haapala; great-grandchildren Ayla Burandt, Brynn Burandt, and Kaiya Burandt; and a sister, Sally.
