Dean “Deano” Thomas Hovern, age 69, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Lester Prairie, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, at Trinity Hospital in Minot, ND.
A Celebration of Life Service with Masonic Rites, will take place Friday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Masonic Temple in Devils Lake, ND, with the Rev. Tom Westcott officiating.
Dean was born Jan. 19, 1950, to Alton and Edna (Perhus) Hovern. He grew up in Lester Prairie, where he was active in many sports and enjoyed seeing his father’s artwork displayed in his childhood hometown.
Dean attended Concordia College, where he played football and played in various bands.
He was employed by Northwest Beverages/Johnson Brothers.
Dean was married to Shirley (Ripley) Hovern April 23, 1977. The couple resided in Devils Lake, ND, where their daughter, Melissa was born.
Dean was an outgoing person and a great musician. He loved music, and spent his life playing his guitar and trumpet in the Elks Band, Shrine Band, Legion Band, and the famous “Thick, Thin and Chunky.” He also was part of the Benaszeski Polka Band, Free Beer, and played with the Aristocats.
Dean enjoyed watching his daughter participate in band and sports, especially track.
After he retired, he found a new hobby in gardening, while continuing to play in the bands.
Dean is survived by his daughter, Melissa “Missy” Jason; granddaughter Alayna Holt; grandson Weston Holt; aunt Donna Perhus; several cousins; and very special friend, Jill Yantes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; aunts, and uncles.
