Lidwina Ann Laxen, age 95, of Winsted, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 30, 2020.
She was born June 13, 1925, in Winsted, the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Horstman) Fiecke. She was the second oldest of 15 children. She often recalled her childhood duties of baking bread, taking care of the babies, and helping raise baby calves.
July 5, 1944, Lidwina Fiecke and Clarence Laxen were united in Holy Matrimony at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. They were blessed with four daughters.
Lidwina was a strong and independent woman with traditional values, that she learned from her German heritage and Catholic faith. She loved cooking for her family, and took great pride in her ability to bake the best doughnuts, caramel rolls, poppyseed bread, strudel, and spaetzles.
Lidwina was a skilled seamstress, painter, and gardener. Her favorite hobby was restoring old dolls using fabric from donated wedding dresses. After all, every little girl needed a bride doll. She was also a prolific quilt maker, and often thanked people for kind gestures by making them a quilt.
She was fiercely competitive, and never passed up a chance to beat someone in cards, including her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Laxen.
Lidwina is survived by her daughters, Dian (the late Raymond) Green, Jane (Chuck) Rathmanner, Renee Laxen (Greg Lynch), Susan (Dennis) Zwaschka; many beloved grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, other family, and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial took place Monday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
