Valerian Lewandowski, 88

Valerian “Larry” Aloysus Lewandowski, age 88, of Glencoe, MN, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson, MN.

Valerian was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Silver Lake, the son of Frank and Josephine (Pawlek) Lewandowski. Valerian was baptized as an infant Feb. 13, 1932, at his home, and later was confirmed in his faith as a youth at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Silver Lake.

Larry received his education at a country and catholic school through the eighth grade. He entered active military service in the United States Army Jan. 16, 1951, and served his country during the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge Dec. 14, 1953.

Larry was united in marriage to Rudella “Della” Haekenkamp at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, June 1, 1957. Larry and Della made their home in Glencoe. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Carol and Ron. Larry and Della shared over 63 years of marriage.

Larry worked at Glencoe Mills as a pellet miller operator for 38 years, and Snyder Drug for 17 years, which is now known as Coborn’s, delivering medication.

He was an active member of the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe. Larry was also a member of Glencoe American Legion Post 95.

Larry enjoyed dancing at PlaMor Ballroom, and was part of the PlaMor dancers for years, vegetable gardening, fishing, playing cards, bingo, and refinishing furniture. Family was very important to him, and he treasured the time spent with them and his friends.

Larry is survived by his wife, Della Lewandowski of Glencoe; daughter, Carol Mathews and her husband, Randy, of Glencoe; son, Ron Lewandowski and his wife, Jessica, of Glencoe; grandchildren, Nathan Mathews of Silver Lake, Kristy Mathews of Glencoe, Travis Mathews of Glencoe, Aaron Rhodes and his significant other, Samantha, of New Auburn, Macy Rhodes and her significant other, Devon, of Winthrop, Alex Rhodes of Hutchinson, Sabrina Lewandowski of Glencoe; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Carson, Oakley, and Bentlee; twin brother, Ben Lewandowski of Glencoe; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine Lewandowski; sisters, Irene Herbert and her husband, George, Bernice Strauss and her husband, Leo; brother, Albin Lewandowski and his wife, Leona; and sister-in-law, Jean Lewandowski.

A Mass of Christian burial took place Saturday, Dec. 12, 10:30 a.m. at Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe, with interment following at the Glencoe Catholic Cemetery in Glencoe.

Father Matthew Wiering officiated, with pianist Denise Lueders, and song leaders, Gus and Irene Makovsky. Military honors were provided by Glencoe American Legion Post 95. Larry’s children, Carol Mathews and Ron Lewandowski were the urn bearers.
