Darren Olson, 51

Darren L. Olson, age 51, of New Germany, died Friday Jan. 24, 2020, at his residence.

Darren Louis Olson was born Dec. 24, 1968, in Watertown, the son of Wendell and Anita (Cunningham) Olson.

After graduating from the Watertown-Mayer High School in 1987, Darren attended Dakota County Technical College.

Darren was united in marriage with Jennifer Lee Dahlstrom Feb. 14, 2009. at Maple Plain Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Darren had a love for football and was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan. He had played on the 1986 State Championship Watertown-Mayer Royals Football team. He had also played semi-pro football for several teams, including the Outlaws, Maulers, Lions, and Dragons. He had coached semi-pro football for the Dragons, as well as the Minnesota Machine. He was proud to assist coaching his son, Aaron, in youth football for several years.

Darren loved his family and cherished time playing card games or just being together. He enjoyed watching Riley’s and Aaron’s sporting events and giving them their morning “pep talks.”

Darren was a proud member of the Watertown-Mayer wrestling family.

Darren was a proud veteran of the United States Army, who served eight years in the reserves.

For more than 25 years Darren had been a truck driver.

Darren will be remembered for his boisterous belly laugh, and having a loving, caring, kind personality. His huge heart was evident to all who met him.

Darren was preceded in death by his father Wendell Olson; grandparents Oscar Olson, Julius and Helen Jacobson, Louis F., and Madeline Cunningham; uncles Bruce Foster, Gary Olson, Roger Jacobson, and Louis J. Cunningham.

Darren is survived by his loving family: wife Jennifer Olson of New Germany; children Riley Olson (special friend Austin Latzke) of New Germany, Aaron Olson of New Germany, Kelsi Oberg of Cottage Grove, Keanen Hall (wife Amber) of Fountain, CO; grandchildren Rylin and Brooklyn Oberg; mother Anita Olson of Watertown; mother-in-law and father-in-law Debra and Richard Dahlstrom of Cottage Grove; sister Tammara Barnes (husband Duane) of Shoreview; brother Keith Olson of Watertown; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Joe Dahlstrom of Cottage Grove, Jacob and Katie Dahlstrom of Cottage Grove; other relatives, and many dear friends.

A memorial service took place at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at Freshwater Church, 138 W. First St. in Waconia, with Pastor Zach Freitas as officiant.

A gathering of family and friends at the church took place Friday from noon to the time of the service.

Serving as urn bearers were Jeremy DeSmith and Rich Gray.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
