Wendell ‘Wheaties’ Schrader Obituary – 2/9/2020


Wendell “Wheaties” Edwin Schrader, age 81, of Glencoe, formerly of Plato, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at GlenFields Living with Care in Glencoe.

He was born July 2, 1938, in Plato, the son of Edwin and Lenora (Heckmann) Schrader. Wendell was baptized July 10, 1938, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg; and was confirmed in his faith April 6, 1952, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato.

He received his education in Glencoe.

Wendell was united in marriage to Kathryn “Kathy” Emich Feb. 18, 1962, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Wendell and Kathryn made their home in Plato. Their marriage was blessed with three sons; Jeff “Porky,” James “Shimo,” and Douglas. Wendell and Kathryn shared almost 58 years of marriage.

Wendell worked at Goebel Fixture Company in Hutchinson, and Lepel Construction in Plato as a carpenter.

He was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato.

Wendell was also a retired member of the Plato Fire Department.

He enjoyed playing ball, fishing, and hunting, especially turkey hunting in Eitzen, MN. He loved driving through the countryside, and family vacations at Lake Hattie. Family was very important to Wendell, and he treasured the time spent with them and his friends. He took great pride in connecting with people to make sure, if he didn’t know you, he would know someone who did know you.

Wendell is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kathy” Schrader of Glencoe; sons, Jeff “Porky” Schrader and his wife, Michelle; James “Shimo” Schrader and his wife, Tammy; and Douglas Schrader and his special friend, Brenda Munsterteiger; grandchildren Mitchell Schrader, Cassidy Schrader and her special friend, Nick Powers, Alex Schrader, Marissa Himple and her husband, Matthew; and Jaylen Schrader; a soon-to-be great-grandchild; sister Romane Ehrenberg; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Diane Schrader, Ouida Schrader, Karen Hoese, Doris Emich, and Roger Emich; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Lenora Schrader; brothers Donald Schrader, and Warren “Butch” Schrader; brothers-in-law Ronald Emich, Donnie Hoese, and Duane Ehrenberg; and sister-in-law LuAnn Emich.

A memorial service took place Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plato, with interment following at the church cemetery. Pastor Tyson Mastin officiated. The organist was Yvonne Schuette. The soloist, John Farber, performed “The Lord’s Prayer.” Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “When Peace Like A River,” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Wendell’s grandchildren; Mitchell Schrader, Cassidy Schrader, Alex Schrader, Marissa Himple, and Jaylen Schrader were urn bearers.
