Thomas Sterner, Sr., 81

Thomas Francis Sterner Sr., age 81, formerly of New Germany, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas F. Sterner Sr. will take place Friday, July 3, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Matt Weiring will be the Celebrant. Alice Nowak will be the organist. Laurie Goodwater will be the vocalist.

Interment with military rites will take place at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

A visitation will will take place Thursday, July 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, and Friday, July 3 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Parish Prayers will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Casket bearers will be Riley Gieser, Joe Laxen, Jacqui Laxen, Joe Sterner, Tyler Sterner, Jase Boogaard, and Adam Biegel.

He was born Jan. 17, 1939, in New Germany, the son of Fred and Amelia (Neumann) Sterner.

Thomas F. Sterner and Hazel M. Goodwater were joined in holy marriage Aug. 12, 1961, at Our Lady of The Lake Catholic Church in Mound. God blessed their marriage with five children.

He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force.

Tom was employed for 20 years with the Minnetonka School District as a custodian.

He was a former Little League baseball coach and a former softball coach, too.

Tom enjoyed pulling pull-tabs.

He belonged to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted.

Tom is survived by his children: Linda Sterner of Anoka, Kristina (Ross) Mathwig of Green Isle, Tom Sterner Jr. of Rogers and special friend Pam, Susan (Louis) Woodson of Ramsey, and T. J. Sterner of New Germany; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; a brother: Martin (Carol) Sterner of Burnsville; a sister: Elizabeth Bakke of Mound; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Kay (Tim) Klath, Leon (Laurie) Goodwater and Marvin Goodwater; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, May 15, 1995; his parents; brothers Alfred, Simon, and Edwin Sterner; sisters Annie Sterner and Rosemary Hilk; and brother-in-law Jerome Goodwater.
