James A. Sumstad Obituary – 9/14/2020


James “Jim” Arnold Sumstad, 63 years old, of Watertown, MN, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2020, at home, related to recent health issues.

Jim was born in Eau Claire, WI, to Arnold and Patricia (Prince) Sumstad, May 2, 1957. He spent his youth in Colfax, WI, graduating from Colfax High School in 1975. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.

Ensign James Sumstad served in Twin Ports Division of the United States Navy Cadet Corps, stationed in Duluth, MN. For almost 2 1⁄2 years, his duties included: serving as an instructor, supply officer, and most recently, as the executive officer.

Jim had several notable achievements, including; medically treating casualties during Grandma’s Marathon, being the safety officer onboard the historic S.S. William A. Irvin move, and instructing Navy culinary specialist services.

Jim moved to Minnesota, and for the last several years resided in Watertown.

Jim worked as a carpet layer, as well as a cook when he was at home. He enjoyed golf and barbecuing. Additionally, he was very involved with the Great Lakes Steamship Society.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Patricia Sumstad; grandparents; several aunts and uncles; and two cousins.

He is survived by one aunt, Jackie (Prince) Oldenberg of Bloomer, WI, as well as several cousins, and friends.

A private service will take place in Colfax, WI, in the near future, as well as a Navy burial at sea in 2021.

The family prefers memorials to be given to Twin Ports Division of the US Navy Cadet Corps and/or Great Lakes Steamship Society.
