Mary Swedberg, 101

Mary Evelyn Swedberg, age 101, of Cokato, passed away Monday, March 30, 2020, at Brookridge Assisted Living in Cokato.

The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato is handling funeral arrangements.

Mary was born Nov. 15, 1918, in Harlan, IN, to Henry and Edna (Ziemer) Ringenberg. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from high school.

Mary went on to college and received a degree in education; and later returned to college at St. Cloud State University, where she received an additional bachelor of science degree.

She met Richard Swedberg from Blackduck, MN, and they were married May 20, 1944, at Grabill Missionary Church in Indiana. To this union, three daughters were born.

Mary’s life with Richard was spent in the states of South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, where Richard was pastor in several Evangelical Free churches.

As a pastor’s wife and mother, Mary spent her time raising the family and being very active in Richard’s ministry. She taught Sunday school classes and vacation Bible school.

Mary was also a second grade teacher at Dassel Elementary School for 16 years. She loved being a teacher, and especially loved teaching children.

After Richard’s death in 1996, Mary married Gordon Swedberg at her daughter’s home in Cokato. Gordon and Mary made their home in Wheatland, WY.

After Gordon passed away in 2005, Mary moved back to Cokato.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Peterson of Cokato; grandchildren Darla Nyquist, Matthew Nyquist, Joshua Nyquist, Benjamin Nyquist, Anji Nyquist, Adam Walker, Aaron Walker, Rachel Seifert, Gregory Peterson and Brooke Nohner; sons-in-law Joel Nyquist, and Robert Walker; brother: Ralph Ringenberg, and Gerald Ringenberg; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, Richard, and Gordon, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Edna Ringenberg, and daughters, Darlene Nyquist, and Carol Walker.
